Most exotic makers offer more than the standard options list. Their personalization programs let a buyer choose colors, materials and details that set one car apart. For collectors, a well-specified personalized car is often the most desirable example of a model.
Ferrari: Atelier and Tailor Made
Ferrari buyers can configure their cars at the Atelier in Maranello, choosing from an extensive palette of colors, materials and options. Tailor Made goes further, with bespoke colors, materials and finishes developed with the client. Beyond that, Ferrari's Special Projects program builds true one-off cars.
Porsche: Paint to Sample and Exclusive Manufaktur
Paint to Sample, often shortened to PTS, lets buyers choose a color outside the standard palette from a list of historic and special colors, and Paint to Sample Plus can match a custom color. Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur handles bespoke interior and exterior details. PTS cars, particularly GT models in historic colors, are among the most sought-after modern Porsches.
Lamborghini: Ad Personam
Ad Personam is Lamborghini's personalization program, offering custom paint, interior colors, materials and stitching beyond the standard configurator.
McLaren: MSO
McLaren Special Operations, or MSO, creates bespoke paint, carbon and interior specifications. An unusual or extensive MSO specification can make a car far more interesting than a standard example.
Others
Rolls-Royce Bespoke, Bentley Mulliner and Mercedes-Benz MANUFAKTUR offer similar levels of personalization in the luxury world.
How to verify a personalized car
Ask for the window sticker or build sheet and check the option codes against the car. Factory documentation, dealer records and, for Porsche, a Certificate of Authenticity help confirm what was ordered.
